Do you want to be a project manager but don’t know if you have what it takes? Here are five main traits that I believe you need in order to succeed within project management.
So you want to become a Project Manager? But you don't know if you have the traits for it? Well, here's five traits to what makes a good Project Manager.
- Effective Communication Skills: A good Project Manager is able to convey his message, goals and mission to all team members effectively. This is obviously task dependent on how you convey the message.
- Organisation Skills: It's a no brainer, a good Project Manager is highly organised and is able to juggle multiple tasks, resources and actions at once. You need to be able to tweak resources effectively in order to keep the project on track.
- Leadership Skills: Yes, you do need to be a good leader. Strong leadership skills help project managers inspire, collaborate and also motivate project teams in order to keep the project on track. You also need to be good at conflict management. Whenever there's a conflict, you need to be able to understand how to deal with that conflict and how to make sure all parties are happy at the end.
- Problem Solving Skills: Now you don't have to be a mathematician in order to solve problems here but you need to be able to find solutions to problems really quick in Project Management. You're going to encounter obstacles and challenges and you need to be able to understand how to deal with these problems really quickly and efficiently.
And finally
- Adaptability: Now I always say a good Project Manager is able to be thrown into any environment and is able to deal with the challenge given. Projects often face setbacks and problems so being adaptable is very important for a Project Manager in order to tackle a situation at different angles in order to keep the project moving forward. You need to be able to adjust plans, strategies, resources at any given time in order to keep the project on track and meet the deadline and deliverables.
You're now 5 steps closer to becoming a Project Manager.
And always remember, hard work beats talent.
